Angel Island is a nice place to visit if you enjoy historical California landmarks, hiking, or biking (up and down hills). We went with our 10 and 7 year old kids and took the tram tour. I would recommend the tour for kids in the 4th grade and above, or after they have studied California history. Our 7 year old was bored and fell asleep on the tour! The tram tour around the island only stops once for a scenic photo op of SF. If you want to check out the Immigration Station where the immigrants had their barracks, you will need to buy a separate guided tour ticket. You will ask the tour guide to drop you off at the Immigration Station, and then hop on the next tram after your Immigration Station tour. We did not know this, and ended up walking about a mile to the Immigration Station after our island tram tour was over. It was a long walk for the kids. With the cost of the ferry ($50) and the island tour ($38), I would only recommend visiting Angel Island if this is something you really want to check out at least once. Directions and Parking:
Departing San Francisco: Pier 41 at San Francisco's Fishermans's Wharf. Near the intersection of Embarcadero and Powell Streets. PIER 39 has convenient visitor parking in the PIER 39 Garage, located directly across the street from the Entrance Plaza. Garage is open 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
