Private Customized Norhern Sonoma Valley SUV Tour from San Francisco
Go Where YOU Want to Go!
We saw a gap in how people do wine tours. You basically have two choices. You can take a tour on a bus with many other people which will restrict where you can go, or you take a limo, with a driver who may or may not know very much about wine. What we are offering is something better than either. It is a private guided tour, (Up to 6 people) that can be customized to go anywhere that you would like, or you can sit back and enjoy as we take you to our favorites.
What we have discovered is that while most people go to wineries around the valley, there is actually a second set of wineries off the beaten path, or in the surrounding mountains. Many of these are people's homes, which make very small batches of hand-crafted wines. Even on the busiest days, as we retreat into the mountains or back-roads, you will discover hidden wineries that don't exist on the maps. This is what we consider the "idealistic" Napa.
With our tours, we don't follow a set schedule and go to the same places every day like most other companies. Instead we rely on a pool of over one hundred different wineries, and as the day goes on, we can tailor the tour as we learn which type of wine you like. The day is customized as we go, so you can stay anywhere as long as you would like and don't have to worry feeling rushed to make the next winery appointment on time. On the other hand, we can always plan a day out in advance if you have specific requests.
We do our tours in new Ford Expeditions, complete with comfortable leather seating for six, rear climate control, and privacy tinting. Larger vehicles can also be arranged.
The small size of our group enables us to go to all types of wineries; from some of the most nationally known and premiere establishments, to places so small that we will be tasting wine in their dining room or back porch. You can observe the entire wine making process, from the vineyard to the bottle. We pick up from over 250 hotels within San Francisco, and then depart for wine country via the Golden Gate Bridge. Tour length is about eight to nine hours.
The Russian River dominates the northern end of the Sonoma American Viticultural Area (AVA). Sonoma was the birthplace of American fine winemaking, and although Napa Valley gained prominence during the fine wine resurgence of the 1960's, Sonoma is on the rise to dominance once again, due to the broader range of varietals that can be planted here. Another is Sonoma's sheer size – and much of it is still unexplored.
It was discovered that Burgundian grapes, particularly Pinot Noir, thrive in Sonoma valley. Vines were planted in the rich deposits of gravel immediately adjacent to the Russina River, which insured excellent drainage. Cool climates allow Pinot Noir to express its delicacy and terroir, and the majority of California's top Pinot comes from the confines of the Russian River Valley. The region has long had a Burgundian tradition of vineyard designate bottlings (one grower selling grapes to one or more wine-maker, who in turn puts the source of the fruit on the bottle).
Pinot Noir is one of the oldest grapes varieties known and has been grown for at least 2,000 years. Because of its long history, it has had more time for clones to develop. There are currently over 100 different types of this grape. Several of them were developed in the town of Dijon, France. During the early 1980's, the word spread that these Dijon Clones existed, and several Californians went to France and came back with budwood, which could be used to grow new vineyards. The onging debate is whether these single clones make the best wine, or if the old selections are superior.
